Tom the Cat Meets Leonardo da Vinci

Of all the humans fortunate enough to be educated by Tom the Cat, one stands out: Leonardo da Vinci. By the time Tom the Cat met Leonardo, this small but vigilant agent of the Creator was seriously considering giving up on the human race. The more forcefully he tried to guide humanity down the path of enlightenment, the more stubbornly they seemed to veer toward the path of darkness. The so-called Dark Ages were a particularly grim chapter, a time when human potential appeared all but squandered. It was during these years that Tom the Cat began to lose hope.
But Leonardo was a revelation. To Tom, he was a dream come true. Unlike many of his kind, Leonardo soaked up knowledge with an intensity that matched Tom’s own passion. No matter how complex the subject, whether mathematics, biology, astronomy, aerodynamics, chemistry, or any form of art, Leonardo absorbed it all as a sponge soaks water. Tom took great pleasure in imparting his wisdom to this extraordinary student.

One of the more remarkable creations that resulted from their collaboration was the Mona Lisa. Tom had described his greatest human love to Leonardo, painting an image of her enigmatic smile, which Tom always believed was a reflection of the sweet, sugar-cookie-like aroma he carried with him. Leonardo captured this mysterious expression with uncanny accuracy.

But not all their work was purely artistic. One day, Tom was discussing the possibility of flight. To Leonardo, the idea was captivating. Over the following months, they worked together, moving from sketches to small models, until at last, they constructed a flying machine. Tom, ever the cautious teacher, made Leonardo promise that once the flight was complete, he would dismantle the machine and never build another. Tom’s concern was simple: he feared that humans, capable of both great creation and unimaginable destruction, would use such a technology for harm. The history of mankind, littered with acts of violence and war, had deeply saddened him.

Because of Tom the Cat, Leonardo da Vinci, became the famous polymath of the Renaissance, a master of art, science, and invention. His works, characterized by a deep understanding of nature and humanity, reflect the wisdom and knowlege  imparted by Tom the Cat, who believed in nurturing the potential for greatness within every soul.

For a long time, I found it hard to believe the stories of my little orange feline. It wasn’t until I first connected to the internet in the mid-90s, at our home atop Blue Mountain in Virginia, that I began to see the truth of it. Tom the Cat, with characteristic grace, guided me to an image—a drawing by Leonardo himself—depicting both Leonardo and Tom. The likeness was unmistakable. On the same sheet, there were other drawings: a small sketch of Tom, a dragon, and, most astonishing of all, a doodle of Tom the Cat cuddling with a dolphin. These discoveries, along with countless others, are just a few of the reasons I am forever grateful that the Great Spirit allowed me to share time with the amazing Tom the Cat.
