The Story of Tom the Cat!

A Mission in Time!

The incredible journey of Tom the Cat, whose wisdom helped shape the Cold War era and the profound impact he had on the world.

Tom the Cat Reaches Moscow

Tom's Journey to the Soviet Union

Tom the Cat had made his way to Moscow along with the Soviet troops returning from Nazi Germany at the end of World War II. Tom the Cat’s journey to the Soviet Union is a tale of resilience and destiny.  Over time Tom the Cat made his way from Moscow to St.Petersburg. Soon after arriving there, Tom found himself in the majestic halls of the Hermitage Museum. This historic institution, known for its welcoming of cats since the time of the Czars, became Tom’s new home. Here, amidst the art and history, Tom thrived, becoming a beloved figure among the museum’s visitors and staff. His presence was not just a comfort but a symbol of the enduring spirit of survival and adaptation in the face of change.

Raisa Gorbacheva Meets Tom the Cat

One afternoon, while Tom was contemplating a Rembrandt masterpiece hanging on the museum wall, a young woman approached him with a curious glint in her eyes. “What do you think of this work?” she asked. It was Raisa Gorbacheva, the wife of Mikhail Gorbachev, the President of the Soviet Union. Tom, ever the art enthusiast, shared his deep knowledge of Rembrandt and his work—an artist Tom had known personally in a previous life. As Tom spoke, Raisa was captivated not only by his insights but also by his charm. Without hesitation, she scooped up the small, orange tabby and hugged him tightly. The moment she caught the scent of freshly baked sugar cookies on his fur, she knew he would be her new best friend. It wasn’t long before Tom moved into the Kremlin, taking up residence in a cozy room near the presidential suite.

One afternoon, Raisa and Tom were dining together at the famous Metropol Hotel. By now, Tom had grown deeply fond of this kind-hearted woman, and as they sipped tea, his emotions began to overwhelm him. “Raisa,” he said, his voice trembling, “I will never tire of you reciting Pushkin to me. Your voice is a melody that soothes my soul. And you know how deeply I respect your humanitarian work.” Raisa smiled, brushing a stray lock of hair from her face, but Tom’s expression grew serious. “For the sake of humanity,” he continued, “I must ask you for a great favor.” His tail flicked nervously. “But before I do that, I have some very bad news to share. While we were in Chernobyl, you were exposed to high levels of gamma radiation. In a few months, you will fall ill with leukemia and… shortly after, you will pass on.” Tears welled up in both of their eyes as their gazes locked. Raisa leaned over and kissed the space between Tom’s ears, right on the giant M-shaped mark in the center of his forehead, a symbol of her affection and sorrow.
“What would you have me do, my love?” she whispered, her voice heavy with emotion. Tom, his voice thick with sadness, explained the gravity of the situation. “If the Cold War continues, humanity and much of the Earth’s life may be lost forever. I need you, Raisa, to use your wisdom and your unique influence to convince your husband to end the conflict.” And so, Raisa’s charm, intelligence, and deep empathy worked their magic. The Cold War began to thaw, and soon the Berlin Wall fell. The world moved closer to peace, and the Soviet Union began its slow unraveling. Mikhail Gorbachev, caught in the tides of history, was removed from power in a coup orchestrated by the Central Intelligence Agency and replaced by a more pliable leader—Boris Yeltsin.

As I reflect on the story that Tom the Cat shared with me, I can’t help but wonder: Is the world ready to learn that it was saved from global thermonuclear destruction not by politicians or generals, but by a small, orange tabby cat and a woman who loved him with all her heart?
